Printer Toner Cartridge Recycling

Printer Toner Cartridge Recycling

It’s never a good sign when the ink on 30 page document you need to have printed out starts to fade on page two. Always having a back up is the first step to having business continue on as usual, but there is always the question as to what to do with the old toner cartridge. Throwing it in the garbage may seem like a good idea at the time, but it’s definitely not the way to go.

Much like almost all electronics, there is value to old toner cartridges. Many companies take toner back at no cost, and some even give credit to purchase new toner as well! If the cartridge can be reused, it’s only a matter of filling it back up and getting it back into the market. If it is broken or cannot be refurbished, the components can be broken down and solid as commodities.

Bottom line is that there is value to just about everything. So the next time your documents start to fade when they are coming out of your printer, copier, or fax machine, be sure to give that toner cartridge a second chance!

Spring Electronics Clean-Up

in ecoTech News

shutterstock_108342464Spring is the perfect time to clear out some of the clutter that has been building up over the past few months. Storing away all of the winter gear and bringing out the summer items means you will be moving things around anyway. Why not make some extra room and get rid of a few items that have been collecting dust for far too long?

Everyone has a junk drawer or closet with some old electronics in it. It could be that Nokia flip phone or a first generation iPod. Mystery charging wires and an array of other “junk” has been taking up prime real-estate for far too long and it’s time to make more efficient use of that space. Throwing the material away definitely isn’t the best idea. Hazardous chemicals are in most of your electronics and the landfill is the last place you should send them. Here is a quick list of things to keep in mind when you look at your old electronics:

-Money- old electronics have a value to them. Along with the hazardous materials are some precious metals that can be refined and recycled. There is a value to just about everything from the plastic to the metals.

-Reuse- That old TV may feel outdated to you, but there can definitely be a second life it. We are upgrading our electronics constantly with the latest and greatest, but the old still can be used and given a second life.

-Recycle- Certified recycling facilities and collection events are popping up all over the place this time of year. Check with local organizations to see when they are occurring, or get involved with a recycler to host your own. It’s a great way to get the community involved and make some money for a good cause!

Before any of your electronics head to the curb, keep these things in mind and make the world a better place!

Earth Day 2014- Recycling Electronics and Beyond

in ecoTech News

Captain Planet (Note: I’m not sure if he is actually a Captain), was preaching the message of recycling to the youth of America for years. His mission was simple: Save the planet. He reminded us every time he saved the planet that “The Power Is Yours!” and that we control our destiny when it comes to recycling. Though the series never focused on electronics recycling, if Captain Planet came back today, I’m confident it would be one of his top priorities to handle.

The month of April, and specifically April 22 (Earth Day), is a great time to recognize how lucky we are to have the natural resources that we use every day and that we should never take them for granted. Recycling should always be something to practice throughout the year, but Earth Day is a great reminder to continue those practices. We can all become complacent when we throw a plastic bottle into the trash rather than the recycling container, but now is the time to start new initiatives, retool old practices, and make the world a better place.  It is up to the individual to make the difference.

Electronics are a relatively new waste stream, and it’s important to be knowledgeable about. The plastic water bottle may not cause pollution in a landfill, but the lead from the CRT monitor next to it will definitely cause some issues. Be aware of where your electronics go and understand the hazards that they can cause to our Earth. We only have one, and Captain Planet has given us the task to make things better.  Find events and certified recyclers to help meet your electronics recycling needs.

On April 26th, ecoTech Management will be working with the Westhampton Beach PTO/PTA’s Earth Day event. We will be there from 1-4PM and will be accepting computers, servers, laptops, CRT monitors, TV’s, and printers. Please come support this great organization and recycle your old electronics!
