What Do I Do With My Scrap Electronics?
in ecoTech News
In the January/February 2014 issue of Scrap Magazine, the results of Harris Interactive poll commissioned by ISRI in November gave some not-so-surprising results. It turns out approximately 30% of those polled have never recycled their scrap electronics because they didn’t know what to do with them. Within that 30%, there is much confusion as to if they can be recycled and how to do it properly. This poll also states that 97% of those questioned would recycle their electronics if they knew what to do with them.
These numbers, though better now than years before, are still low. More technology is being used today than ever before and the turnover rate is increasing with each new item to hit the market. The sheer volume of electronics out there is staggering. Yet with 30% of people not sure what to do with their electronics, it’s a shame to not see that number be smaller than it is. A simple Google search will give you plenty of information as to what can be done with your old scrap electronics. There is value in the old electronics and also hazards to discarding of it in the wrong way.
If there is one thing to remember, it’s that everything has value. By separating and recycling materials, we can keep our environment cleaner. We can also reduce the amount of energy and resources it takes to mine new minerals and reuse what’s already out there. Stay informed, and help others make the best decisions they can when it comes to recycling electronics.
